Question for the community about service in general and specifically re: Mike's Bistro

Hey, Bob. Just checking in with you. I know communication is paramount. I immediately tried to check in with the hostess, but she was on the phone and didn't acknowledge me. I then stood there patiently waiting (never leaving the stand) while she acknowledged the other party. My friend at the bar, by the way, was sitting right next to the hostess stand (it's about two feet or three to the bar). I didn't "let another couple get in front of me." She waved them in. The bartender knows the service sucks. That's why he tries to save situations. I watched it twice. As for my attitude, the one you're getting now, it didn't surface till the ordeal went on with continued rudeness by the hostess and the "manager" who was too busy on his phone to come out and help her. And since I'm fasting today (sorry for the kosher/Jewish culture reference that I didn't explain and that you feel is necessary on a kosher board, but I'm too tired right now to do it--I'm a coffee drinker and fasts kill me sometimes--I'll throw in that Mike being a kiss-behind and only talking to his "friends" on more than one visit to his restaurant, not greeting anyone else in the room doesn't allow him to make up for his mediocre, overpriced food which doesn't compare to Moshe's at Pardes who I have also taken to task for service issues (oops, sorry, another "inside reference from the kosher people"). And to end off my rant, this new site design sucks and all of us on kosher know it. I wish I knew where everyone is going now. I miss everyone and the funny family we created on here. Have an easy, meaningful fast to those who are fasting and G-d grant me the strength to have more patience with people, especially on a day like today.

Kosher experience in Wilmington Delaware shoprite--does it have hot food? Is it worth stopping in?

Going to be renting a yurt nearby. Yes, a yurt. My family will be roughing it, but I would like a hot rotisserie chicken if I can get it. :)

If the shochet does Treiber why not eat hindquarters?

Because finding a shochet that treibers in the US is even more difficult than finding one who will do mammals.

With that explanation I have to agree with you. The problem was completely on the restaurant's end. Any negative reaction you had was totally justified.

And finding someone who knows how to do the hindquarters is even more difficult. Since it's too labor-intensive to be economical in the USA, there's little incentive for anyone to learn how to do it.

I looked at a bunch of Kosher-tagged postings (there was an interesting discussion on possibly Kosher parmigian- reggiano cheese) and most of the postings had the word Kosher in the title. So I don't see why there is necessarily a problem. The OP could have discouraged non-Kosher hounds by writing "Kosher community," lest we all think we are part of the community. Given the "who cares" response of some regulars I can't entirely fault her desire to have her "family" only. But ultimately this is an open forum not a private club.

Yes, used the duck fry -- wrapped fresh figs and grilled. Worked quite nicely. Duck fat -- from any source -- is amazing! Duck fried potatoes/sweet potatoes will change your world...With a little beef fry/lamb bacon, etc. and a hit of maple sugar, the best!

So, what tag(s) did you attach and were any added?

It's interesting that Kosher is both a board and a tag. I wonder if that's true for anything else. It certainly contributes to the cluttered look of the pages.

I only tagged it kosher. Manhattan and Chinese were both added either automatically or by a moderator. I wonder why Chinese was added but Mexican wasn't. But either way, tags were added beyond what I started with.

I was thoroughly under-impressed. I got the sausage and the duck fry. I felt that the sausage was grainy and not flavorful as I would expect duck to be and the duck fry didn't have any duck flavor when cooked, just crispy (which is fine if that is what you want, but at that price I expect flavor too). And before you say I most not have cooked it right, they were cooked in a cast iron pan (I used the fat to brush on my bun for my burger, so that was nice)

OK, since you started it, I would love for a meat Indian place too (sure miss Shalom Bombay).

I tried the duck sausage this past week - very underwhelmed. I love duck, as does the rest of my family. I found the sausage sorely lacking in duck flavor and super duper salty.

I was pretty sure it was happening too. But after someone in another thread claimed the poster must have added the tags, I created this thread as a test. So now we know definitively that tags get added after the original post and only tagging a thread as kosher is not a solution.

Worth every penny if you asked me. Gave it to someone who does not eat/cook kosher and knows what fish sauce should taste like. It's authentic and on spot with umami

I saw that Schnitzel + got a pretty good review in The Record (local general media paper) http://www.northjersey.com/food-and-dining-news/informal-dining-schnitzel-in-teaneck-1.1650295 They give it 2 stars, meaning must try if you are in the neighborhood. They thought the burgers and desserts were sub par but the falafel, schnitzels and shawarma got excellent write up, and that's from a mainstream food writer.

have you tried Service Station, next to Prime at the Bentley? I saw the menu when I went to eat at Prime and it looked pretty good..... I am going back when it is not raining to enjoy sitting outside. And Brat Factory at 106th and Amsterdam is pretty new and getting some rave reviews. Great American Health Bar has gone reliably kosher, but I hear the food was never anything to rave about just adequate basic diner food
