Question for the community about service in general and specifically re: Mike's Bistro

While it is challenging to respond based on an experience from one night, I tend to agree with Cappucino (a long time chownhounder BTW). I had a very similar experience at Reserve Cut last week when my wife and I went out for dinner to celebrate our birthdays. It was obvious that the host/hostess and manager were giving priority tables and attention to the "regulars". I could see it both ways. Restaurants, especially the higher end one like Mikes or Reserve Cut, do rely on a steady flow of "regulars" and should keep them happy (no different than any other service business - airlines, hotels, etc.) and I would expect that they get priority treatment. This happens even at non-kosher restaurants as well. However, there should be a minimum service standard at a high end restaurant and there is no excuse for the hostess/server/manager to be rude. Take this experience that I had while getting lunch at the Schnitzli truck last week in midtown Manhattan during the height of the lunch rush. There was one person taking orders/money and then a bunch of kitchen staff making the orders. It was obvious that orders were backing up due the many people waiting for their orders and the number of sandwiches piling up. Yet, there was someone (likely a manager or supervisor) sitting in the front seat of the food truck checking instagram on his phone that couldn't be bothered to help move things along. I waited 25 minutes for my chicken burger patty and was told it took so long because a burger takes longer to cook than schnitzel even though it was miraculously ready when I finally lost patience and asked about the status. As I was leaving, I saw that person was done checking whatever was important on his phone and finally made it to the back of the truck and started to help sort the backlog. Sometimes I think people in the kosher food industry just don't care about service since they think that they have no competition...

Haven't seen any recent posts about kosher dining in & near Chicago. Looking for suggestions for an upcoming trip: upscale, & fast food; meat & dairy; downtown, & in Jewish suburbs. Thanks so much!

Where are the lots of options? Unfortunately I have yet to receive welcoming service in any (kosher) restaurant in the city. In my experience this has only happened in "ethnic" restaurants (for example Mariana in Queens and Chatanooga/Colbeh in Great Neck).

Do not know when you will be coming to Chicago but there is a new Argentinian Steak House that will be opening in the Peterson Park neighborhood which is just south of West Rogers Park - from Great Kosher Restaurants: CHICAGO RESTAURANT NEWS: So let's get to the little surprise we have for you from yesterday and my day with Elías Michel Barnatan from Argentina. While Elias owns 3 sushi restaurants in Buenos Aires, called Pi-Chi-Klin (interesting name), he and his family are actually moving to Chicago and opening an Argentinean Steakhouse on Lincoln Avenue, near Peterson Park this summer! He was in Chicago the last 2 weeks putting things in place and on his way back to Argentina he was doing a little research yesterday in New York. He was very impressed with the concise menu of the restaurants we went to in Le Marais, Wolf & Lamb and Izzy's, so expect a menu that is straightforward and specializes in Argentinean cuisine. The restaurant will be waiter service with about 60 seats at first with room to expand to over 100. I believe there is a party room upstairs but more more details will be revealed as they start the renovation soon.

Finally ate there last weekend. The food was quite good. The dishes that we had were garlic naan, vegetable samosas, vegetable soup, chicken curry and chicken kebabs (I forgot the exact name). Very tasty!

People love to bitch about the 'new' design and frankly I don't even remember what the old one looked like anymore.

There is STILL a "kosher board" and this post is on it. As has been the case on all previous versions of the site, however, posts on the kosher board appear in the listing of "latest posts" on the site overall so they were no more "difficult to find" than any other "latest post," and there is of course no separate registration for the board, nor is any regular on the kosher board prevented from posting elsewhere on the site, or vice versa. MOST posts on the kosher board, however, are not so general, with no real reference to kashrut as such, and so people who don't have a specific interest in "kosher-related subjects" simply ignore them. This thread, however, is not such a thread. While you and a few others seem to be offended by gargupie's post for reasons known only to yourselves, it's not as if he or she posted a recipe for a crown pork roast or Beef Stroganoff in a thread discussing ideas for special occasion meals (or even "merely" one for a wheat flour-based cake in a Passover thread), for heaven's sake... There may not be the same number of kosher restaurants as non-kosher to choose from in Manhattan, but it's hardly as though Mike's Bistro is one of three... And the gist of the point is fundamentally the same no matter how many, or how few, there are: if you don't like their service (or food, for that matter), vote with your feet and your wallet. What else are you going to do, anyway?

Ordered the stuffed chicken with rice and mushrooms 10 days ago and had it last week before going meatless . A well-packaged boneless chicken breast arrived as advertised with a single serving challah roll and plastic utensils. The flavor of the chicken and sauce was similar to the stuffed chicken breasts we get from Mon Cuisine/Meal Mart. Big advantage is that they are shelf stable. For $12.95 + shipping it's a pretty good deal. However, they should really get rid of the picture of a whole stuffed chicken next to the $12.95 price!

The real question is how long before they add a sushi taco to maintain their hashgacha?

"Wherever they are" ? RUN! Ms. Smith is here, have to say hello! Maybe if you are nostalgic to live in quaint small town America. I just want the products I need, purchased using the payment method I choose, bag 'em and leave. EDIT: Recognizing this is a bit astray from the OP.

Sour tomatoes help, please

Thanks to this group, I've had a lot of success brining pickles, using the original recipe. In addition to pickles, my mother made the most wonderful sour tomatoes. To recreate these should I use the same pickle recipe? Should the tomatoes be treated in a special way? Cored? Punctured? Any help would be much appreciated.

I think its the word jarring im stuck on. Seems like an extreme reaction. Miffed or perturbed maybe, but jarred I save for when i see a homeless guy taking a crap on the street.

Sorry for the confusion. I meant jarred in the sense of this feels a bit awkward that I'm standing here and you haven't said hello or smiled, as if this is nothing but a bother for you. It's relative to the situation. I don't get jarred if I'm not fawned over when buying a bottled water at a newspaper stand. I've learned not to expect a lot of customer service with my pizza slices, but even then, isn't it nice if the counterman acknowledges or recognizes you after you've been there 10 or 100 times? I do agree that when mandated by management it can become wearisome. There's a teller in my local bank who shouts out a hello when I have one foot in the door, but it's a zombie hello...

Had duck sausages at Bedford last week; they were wrapped in pretzel "dough." They were very good, but whether they were significantly better than hot dogs would have been, I can't really say.

Marani is quiet off-hours, and M-W evening. Space in that neighborhood is cheap. I love Marani. But when it fills, it has the same hard surfaces magnifying noise that most restaurants favor.
