You don't mention how much you want to spend. If your friend spent hours and hours, it might be nice to get something a little heftier. Maybe a gift certificate to a restaurant. Even if it's not enough to cover an entire meal, it might make a meal out affordable for them. Or they could just go for dessert and coffee.
