People go to Israel for yeshiva/seminary, go to other people's houses for Shabbos (where they typically have shnitzel and borekas instead of baked chicken and kugel...and of course the chumus and salads with the challa) and brought the idea back to the US, where it was immediately Americanized. There's a lot of back and forth going around.
I like the idea because it turns challa into its own special course to be savored instead of something to quickly munch down in order to get to the 'real' food.
