Pickled herring can be one of those things that are either very very good or the worst possible thing. I used to go to this rabbi's house for Shalosh Seudos-he was a Gerrer chosid- and he made pickled herring from scratch. I would fish out the herring from a big pot (there were hot red peppers inside!) and it was as smooth as silk.
Unfortunately, I've also had herring served at a kiddush and it was like eating an old boot. I had to run around looking for a napkin so that I could get this doggie chew toy out of my mouth.
