Gefilte Fish: A Cautionary Tale

Pjudef................ You sound young and you will experience a lot more as life goes on................. You paint with a broad brush and may not truly be aware of all the facts and circumstances concerning food being served. There is a good chance that you have run into jarred gefilte fish at non-fancy shul kiddushes without knowing it. Those often present little balls with the frilled toothpicks or even slices presented nicely on a platter may well have started out in a large jar (or can). While you think that "EVERYONE" you've ever known has bought either the fresh loaves or frozen, chances are you know many people who have never served you gefilte fish, and you really have no idea what they buy/serve. You might be served the fresh or frozen loaf as a Shabbos or Yuntif guest, but that overworked wife/mother may keep jars in the pantry for quick emergency family feeding. OR>>>>>>>that wonderful grandmother type, or young Chowish sophisticate may make their own. Don't be so fast to judge or make blanket statements. I prefer to use the frozen loaves if we are 6 or less for dinner. For larger groups I'll make my own. My wife makes her own salmon gefilte fish (I don't eat it, but our daughters do). My ex-MIL only likes the Rokeach Old Vienna from the jar. It reminds her of the taste she grew up with.
